Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart Museum for Contemporary Art The Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin was built in late classical style to plans by its director Georg Friedrich Ernst Neuhaus from 1846 to 1847 as a terminal railway station of the Berlin-Hamburg train. It is the only terminal preserved of Berlin of this time, but is no longer used as a train station. At the same time, it is one of the oldest station buildings in Germany. In the mid-eighties the Berlin construction tycoon Erich Marx offered the city his private collection. Thereupon, the Berlin Senate decided in 1987 to establish a museum for contemporary art in the former station. There are exhibited works by, among others, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Long, Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly. The portfolio consists of exhibits of the National Gallery and the collection of Marx. The museum is also known for its changing exhibitions. And since 2004, highlights of the art collection of Friedrich Christian Flick are shown are being shown until the year 2010. |

Jüdisches Museum Jewish Museum The museum building in Berlin's Kreuzberg district connects the old building of the baroque Collegienhaus (former seat of the superior court of justice) with a new building. The construction is based on a draft of the American architect Daniel Liebeskind. The shape recalls a cracked Star of David. The Jewish Museum shows the visitor two millennia of German-Jewish history, the highs and lows of relations between Jews and non-Jews in Germany. The museum houses a permanent exhibition, a number of temporary exhibitions, an extensive archive, the Rafael Roth Learning Center and research institutions. It had about 690,000 visitors in 2005, making it one of the most visited museums in Berlin. |

Topographie des Terrors Open-Air Exhibition Between 1933 and 1945, the central institutions responsible for the repressive and criminal policies of National Socialism were located on the terrain of the Topography of Terror, situated between Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse (today Niederkirchnerstrasse), Wilhelmstrasse and Anhalter Strasse. Here, in close proximity to the traditional government district, the Secret State Police, the SS leadership and the Reich Security Main Office set up their offices: the administrative headquarters of the Secret State Police and the notorious Gestapo "house prison" were located at Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8; the neighbouring Hotel Prinz Albrecht housed the offices of the SS Reich leadership; and the Security Service (SD) of the SS Reich leadership was established at Wilhelmstrasse 102. As of 1939, Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8 was also the address of the newly founded Reich Security Main Office. |

Museum Berggruen Picasso and his contemporaries The Museum Berggruen (also known as Berggruen Collection) in Berlin-Charlottenburg is considered one of the world's most important collections of classical modernism, which the collector and art dealer Heinz Berggruen left in a "gesture of reconciliation" to his hometown of Berlin at a price far below value. Works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Paul Klee and Henri Matisse are here under one roof. The Museum Berggruen is one of the state museums in Berlin. |

Haus der Wannseekonferenz House of the Wannsee Conference At the Wannsee conference of the 20th of January, 1942 under the chairmanship of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Reich Security Main Office, 15 senior representatives of Nazi Reich government and party departments came together to organize in detail the beginning of the Jewish Holocaust and to assure the cooperation of all parties. In the rooms of the villa in 1992, the Memorial and Education Site ‘House of the Wannsee Conference’ was opened. On the ground floor of the house the permanent exhibition "The Wannsee Conference and the genocide of the European Jews" informs visitors of the process of exclusion, persecution and expulsion of Jews between 1933 and 1945 by the Nazis. Also how ghettoization was arranged, and deportation, and the murder of European Jews in the German sphere of influence. |

Fort Hahneberg On the extreme western edge of Berlin, after six years of construction in 1888 Fort Hahneberg was completed. It was the last newly built fortress in Germany. To protect the Spandau centre of arms, after the German-French War 1870-1871 a belt of four forts around the city were planned. However only one was realized, since the development of artillery projectiles, especially the introduction of explosive grenades, meanwhile made this type of defensive fortress ineffective. Since 1993, it is cared for by the " Arbeits- und Schutzgemeinschaft Fort Hahneberg e.V." which offers regular tours. |
